This video is on capturing a behavior using clicker training. I have been working on capturing natural behaviors with Isabelle and putting them on cue. So far she can sneeze on cue “Smell the Skunk” and now scratching “Do you have fleas?”. I have also captured other tricks that Isabelle likes to do by just clicking her when she does them and put them on cue, “boing” and “cross paws”.
Once your dog understands that their movements can make you click and earns them a reward, they will start offering behaviors and be more aware as to what they were doing when you clicked. I think that it is just fun to try to take what the dog already loves doing or does anyway and put it on cue.

I know, those natural behaviors seem to be much harder to get on cue. I think that it has something to do with instinct, but not really sure. It seems like it would just be so easy since the dog just does the behavior, but it is not easy to capture a natural behavior. Good luck. You could capture the lip licking. That one seemed pretty easy??

ahah loved it! I was trying to capture Joel yawning and it is not that easy, he still has not put 2 plus 2 together, this is such a fun way of teaching and learning with dogs!

Thank you! For some reason, natural behaviors are difficult to get on cue. However, I have found that the more natural behaviors I get on cue, the quicker Isabelle picks up the next one. The sneeze took me months, the scratch took about a week, so maybe the next one will be even faster.

Thanks Emily! This one has taken me about a week to get on cue. I just never had the camera on when she would scratch. I am also trying to work on more hind leg awareness with her. So, I figured if I clicked the leg lift she could later transfer some learning.

Well, it does not seem hard, but for some reason natural behaviors take a little while to get on cue. Prior to this video I had been clicking Isabelle for the scratch without putting the verbal cue on it for days. So, if it does not go as fast as you would like it, be patient. Your pup will get it in his time.

I agree! I have found that capturing natural behaviors is very difficult. I think that the dog is so into the behavior and not thinking about the click. However, once I captured the lip licking and the sneeze, the natural behaviors seem to be getting easier with Isabelle. Sometimes I am in public or have company over and when Isabelle does a behavior that I have been working on, I mark it with “yes” if I do not have a clicker and I run to get a reward. People probably think I am crazy!
