Does anyone know of a good DVD about dog training?
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.
Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

I am planning on getting a dog, but I’ve never had one before and I don’t know the first thing about training. I want to train it so it doesn’t end up like my cousin’s dog who jumps all over people and barks at everything. I want my dog to be my buddy so please hook me up with some sort of DVD to give me the basics of training my new dog right.
Cesar Millan has several videos on being the pack leader which is a good place to start. Sign up for obedience classes when you get your puppy, read all you can on your breed of dog so you know what to expect. There are a ton of books on training i.e. “Dog tricks for Dummies”
Being your dogs pack leader is the first place to start, dogs don’t respect you if you aren’t their leader. giving your dogs rules, boundaries and limitations, not allowing them to do anything they want, giving the dog structure and a strict schedule helps also. But definitely training classes that way you have hands on experience with a professional trainer who can correct you as you go along is the best place to start.
If your cousins dog jumps all over people then he has obviously learned that jumping gets him attention, even negative attention (down, off, go away) is attention. Remember reward the behavior you want (treats or praise) and ignore the behavior you don’t want. Always give affection or attention at the right time will make your dog associate the good behavior with the affection, giving affection at the wrong time can make your dog associate it with bad behavior.
Remember whatever behavior gets them attention they will repeat so understand when to give attention and affection and learn when not to.
Watch “The Dog Whisperer” on Friday nights on the National Geographic channel and “It’s Me or The dog” on Animal Planet, both excellent trainers will show you how to train and correct problem behavior as it arises.
Good luck to you start BEFORE you get the dog that way you are prepared to handle whatever problems come along.

Hi and great question! Wish more people would ask those kinds of questions BEFORE getting their dog.
Cesar Millan is definately NOT a waste of time. Understand that what his focus is on is problem dog behavior modification NOT training, they are different.
One of the BEST things you can do is to get his “Your New Dog, the First Day and Beyond” which shows how to first pick and match the dog to your lifestyle, energy and willingness to spend time with the dog, then shows how to introduce the dog into your home and family reducing problems before they start.
There are three big areas you want to look at.
First, please consider a rescue adoption rather then the buying a dog from a breeder - save a life by your choice and if you want a particular breed, there are breed rescues that you can go to, some will even transport acrss country.
Second, the age of the dog is a HUGE factor. All the problem dogs I have worked with are age 18 months to 4 years from owners who through their were cute puppies but were not willing to work with them when they were high energy teenagers so when they developed behavior problems, abandoned them to shelters to get euthanized or for someone else to fix. (I work with thoseproblem dogs, I would take a 5 year old calm dog in a heart beat.
The third item I hope you will take time to research is the different kind of breed-specific behaviors in the kind of dog you are interested in. I got a sheltie one time because I always wanted a dog like Lassie. I used to think it was funny that this poor beloved creature would do circles around furniture, around the house, around nothing at all, not realizing that it was his abundance of energy looking for something to herd (not to mention a tendancy for heel nipping sometimes). 20 years later (I’m 55 now) I saved a beagle about to be euthanized for food agression brought on by teasing kids in his prior family, and not only rehabbed/rehomed him but drained his energy by providing scent activities and games, (in addition by understanding what was going on with that beagle bray sound).
PS I am one of millions of people who have successfully changed bad dogs into good dogs using Cesar Millan techniques which works when other solutions dont. I’m up to around 40 rescued last chance dogs now who have been rescued and re-homed now.
There are a few short clips on training on the HSUS web site: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/tamar_geller.html
Dogwise.com has tons of stuff, including:
- training a recall http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB810P
- general training info http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB957

If you only get one, go with Jean Donaldson's. She rocks!
Please don't get any of Cesar Milan's videos. His methods are outdated and using them is a great way to ruin the relationship with your dog.

Don’t waste your money on a DVD. As a first time dog owner you need to go to a training class, and your dog or puppy will greatly benefit from group training. In my experience, dogs learn from other dogs almost as much as they learn from people. When they see other dogs behaving and minding, they are more likely to copy that behavior.
Many shelters offer beginning obedience. Here are some links to professional trainers
